• YOUR PERSONAL STYLIST - INTERVIEW WITH JANINE DUDENHÖFFER

    Janine Dudenhöffer

Inspired by Marie Kondo and Elika Gibbs, YOUR PERSONAL STYLIST organizes the wardrobes of many - online and offline. We talked to Janine Dudenhöffer about body positivity, swap events, the biggest organizational errors and how her business contributes to a sustainable lifestyle.

DEAR JANINE, IN TWO SENTENCES: WHO ARE YOU? WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
I am a trained fashion editor, mother of two boys and now working with your-personal-stylist.com as a Wardrobe-Detox.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA OF HELPING WOMEN AND MEN DEVELOP NEW LOOKS FORM THEIR EXISTING WARDROBES? WAS THERE A KEY MOMENT?
It was my colleague Maren Assmus who came up with this idea. She has been giving others a good feeling for 15 years as a stylist! Our main target group is women. Maren is a diversity expert in fashion and specializes in women in leadership positions. She also mops out with men. And helps them to consciously let parts in. I am a sustainability expert and have specialised in mothers in particular. My book "Der Mamastyleguide" laid the foundation for this.
There were several key moments: A chance reunion with Maren after we had already worked together in a fashion editorial office, the statement that we live close to each other, that our children are the same age, that our demands on our job have changed - I wanted to get closer to people and away from my desk again. Maren once told me: with you, the women just feel that they're being taken care of, and you're a good person to spend time with.
Maren founded Your Personal Stylist 4 years ago out of the motivation to strengthen women, especially in times of upheaval. And in spring 2019 he won me over for this, now our project.

HOW DOES IT WORK? ABOUT CONVERSATIONS? ABOUT TRASHING OUT? ABOUT REORDERING? AND WHAT DOES THAT COST ME?
If we are honest, it is the case with almost all things, so that a look from the outside is helpful. With a concept, a presentation an objective opinion fresh wind can bring in. That's exactly what we do! Prices on request to info@your-personal-stylist.com.
Our core business is to organise your wardrobe together with women. We help you to sort out parts that are no longer needed and make existing parts visible. Especially by finding combinations for them that they have not yet discovered for themselves. This can begin in one of our workshops, ends with our wardrobe check - we always do that ... and often we then go shopping with or for the women afterwards, knowing what they really need and what they don't need. Our long-time customers usually don't go shopping themselves, but book us throughout the year, e.g. for the new season.

YOU OFFER YOU CUSTOMERS NOT ONLY WARDROBE CHECKS AND PERSONAL BRANDING, BUT ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF CONSULTATION HOURS AND CHECKS VIA SKYPE. WHAT IS BEHIND THIS CONCEPT & HOW DOES IT WORK?
We not only offer our wardrobe checks online, but also pass on tips on Instagram and Facebook. We can also reach those who have a more difficult access due to personal situations, e.g. mothers before returning to work after the birth of a child. And of course all women outside Berlin.
You can imagine our wardrobe checks via Skype as an extension of our service. We are actually sitting parallel to the woman at the computer, while she makes everything visible in her closet. Because yes, cleaning out and styling together also works online! This is especially exciting for customers who don't live in Berlin.

SUSTAINABILITY & CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION ARE VERY CLOSE TO YOUR HEART. HOW DOES THE "YOUR PERSONAL STYLIST" CONCEPT CONTRIBUTE TO A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE?
What many people don't know is that fashion is the second biggest resource guzzler, right after the oil industry. For the CO2 footprint of a normal white T-shirt you could drive a 56k car. Fast fashion chains continue to see an increase in sales, even though many of their parts last less than their love for them. How could it not be sustainable to point out the opportunities in existing and conscious, valuable consumption? Our customers know afterwards what suits them and what they no longer need. Mispurchases and shopping frenzy have no chance here, since they focus on their personal shopping list, on which it says what they really still need. That's good for your wallet - and for the environment!

HOW CAN YOU CONCEPTUALIZE YOUR OWN WARDROBE IN A SUSTAINABLE WAY & WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON ORGANIZATIONAL ERROR YOU HAVE OBSERVED SO FAR?
In order to discover really new combinations from the existing, we first have to make the existing visible and create space for development. So: Get EVERYTHING out of the active wardrobe (seasonal wardrobe, occasional wardrobe, wedding dress), which is not used regularly.

BODY POSITIVITY IS CURRENTLY AN IMPORTANT TOPIC: WHAT EXPERIENCES HAVE YOU HAD SO FAR IN ORGANIZING WARDROBES?
There is a questionnaire which we send to our customers in advance. 3% of the women answer the question what they like about their body with: "Everything".
Many don't know where their waist is and prefer to wear wide tops rather than tight ones.
The fascinating and fulfilling thing about our work is to see how the facial expression changes when the women in an outfit step on the mirror in which they like themselves. The attitude in the photos - before/after - which we make and publish on social media in consultation with the customers, speaks volumes.

YOU ALSO ORGANIZE "SWAP" EVENTS. HOW DOES IT WORK? CAN EVERYONE COME? ARE THERE ALREADY OTHER DATES?
Our swap events work as follows:

    • You bring a maximum of 10 quality clothes/accessories that you would like to swap.
    • We provide clothes racks and hangers.
    • We are at your side as stylists.
    • In an exclusive community, you can come into contact with other women and share your pieces with them.
    • All you need is your mobile phone to record the condition of the exchanged pieces with a photo and the contact details of your Spark Joy partner.
    • You are welcome to return the items at the next event. And you'll notice how intuitively you value other people's things.

Ergo: We would like to encourage women to coat and share their favourite items, i.e. to exchange and borrow them. To be able to let go of the block of property. We also swappen clothes from ourselves and help you to find the best combinations for you. The focus is on networking and positive exchange with like-minded people.
To secure your place at the next swap on 18 January 2020 at Wühlischstraße 12 Friedrichshain, near Ostkreuz, we kindly ask all interested persons to register at info@your-personal-stylist.com. This helps us to plan the event better.
If you would like to give yourself a present, you can also request a voucher for a cupboard check. A great alternative for all who want to get away from impetuous consumption.

WHAT IS YOUR SUSTAINABLE FAVOURITE SPOT IN BERLIN?
This is actually the street lighting on which our office is located, where 6 exciting women now run their own businesses. Right next to us, the girls from Pictofactum make their own jewellery. One house number further you will find vegan food and drinks in the coffee ginger - so tasty, that you will be blown away!
