After studying fashion design at the ESMOD fashion school in Berlin, Leonie Isabel Appels worked for various companies such as Lodenfrey and mytheresa.com before the then 25-year-old moved to Milan to work as a design assistant for the Stone Island label. When she was offered a job as a designer there, it was hard for her to turn it down. But she had already enrolled for a master's degree at the renowned Luigi Bocconi University of Economics.
Leonie Isabel Appels, the founder and designer of Liapure Design Studio
Since her fashion studies, Leonie had been dreaming of her own label. Now the time had come. She developed a timeless, long-lasting and locally produced collection. And named it after her initials: LIA and the word "pure", which is the perfect paraphrase for what is important to her in her designs: namely purism, minimalism, authenticity and genuineness.
"The fact that the industry for which my heart burns is one of the biggest environmental sinners in the world - which the film The true Cost impressively showed me once again - was almost unbearable for me, “explains the designer. "What is the right approach when you are confronted every day with the fact that creative input is being replaced more and more by mere copying? When craftsmanship is increasingly relegated to the background and fashion is no longer fashion, but clothing. When the appreciation for it is lost."
Liapure does not follow trends and is utterly timeless. The claim is to create seasonless fashion that will not need to be constantly replaced by new pieces. In addition to the sustainable and high-quality fabrics, Liapure stands for a perfectly coordinated monochrome colour scheme. Each essential is available in cream white, beige and black and is dyed exclusively for Liapure.
The fit of the designs suits the most diverse body shapes and also the most diverse life situations of a woman - even for pregnant women. Perfect essentials for the whole year, regardless of the season.
"With the Essentials, I want to concentrate on the essence. That's why I focus on calm shades that can be combined with everything. You can wear them as monochrome or mix-and-match looks," explains the designer.
In addition to sleek designs, Leonie wants Liapure to bring together creatives who complement and help each other. Collaborations with goldsmiths, artists and other creatives result in special collection pieces - this is how Liapure Atelier, a collection of only five pieces that is released twice a year in limited editions, was created alongside the Essential collection.
"Each piece is an eye-catcher on its own, but all the designs in the collection can also be wonderfully combined with the Essentials. And of course we offer made-to-measure pieces on request," explains the designer.
Production takes place in small local factories in Germany. This keeps transport distances short and guarantees fair wages. The quantities are kept small and only produced again when a piece is sold out, in order to avoid overproduction. All fabrics come from Italy or Germany and are made from sustainable materials such as lyocell, modal, organic cotton or linen.

Since most of the fabrics are made from wood fibres, Leonie decided to plant three trees with Plant for the Planet for every essential sold from the end of February 2021 onwards. In this way, nature is not only given back its resources, but resources are actually built up.
The yarns and buttons are also made from natural materials such as mother-of-pearl and cotton yarn. The shipping boxes are made of recycled cardboard and coloured with soy dye. Stickers made from recycled material, gift ribbons woven from cotton, labels, size label and care label made from cotton, hangtags made from recycled paper,...
Liapure pays attention to every detail - for a 'small' contribution to making the fashion world a little more sustainable.
